Multi-Thread Hydrodynamic Modeling of a Solar Flare

چکیده

Past hydrodynamic simulations have been able to reproduce the high temperatures and densities characteristic of solar flares. These simulations, however, have not been able to account for the slow decay of the observed flare emission or the absence of blueshifts in high spectral resolution line profiles. Recent work has suggested that modeling a flare as an sequence of independently heated threads instead of as a single loop may resolve the discrepancies between the simulations and observations. In this paper we present a method for computing multi-thread, time-dependent hydrodynamic simulations of solar flares and apply it to observations of the Masuda flare of 1992 January 13. We show that it is possible to reproduce the temporal evolution of high temperature thermal flare plasma observed with the instruments on the GOES and Yohkoh satellites. The results from these simulations suggest that the heating timescale for a individual thread is on the order of 200 s. Significantly shorter heating time scales (20 s) lead to very high temperatures and are inconsistent with the emission observed by Yohkoh. Subject headings: Sun: corona, Sun: flares

Optical Spectral Observations of a Flickering White-Light Kernel in a C1 Solar Flare

We analyze optical spectra of a two-ribbon, long duration C1.1 flare that occurred on 18 Aug 2011 within AR 11271 (SOL2011-08-18T15:15). The impulsive phase of the flare was observed with a comprehensive set of space-borne and ground-based instruments, which provide a range of unique diagnostics of the lower flaring atmosphere. Here we report the detection of enhanced continuum emission, observ...

Long Duration Flare Emission: Impulsive Heating or Gradual Heating?

Flare emissions in X-ray and EUV wavelengths have previously been modeled as the plasma response to impulsive heating from magnetic reconnection. Some flares exhibit gradually evolving X-ray and EUV light curves, which are believed to result from superposition of an extended sequence of impulsive heating events occurring in different adjacent loops or even unresolved threads within each loop. I...

Determination of the length of coronal loops from the decay of X-ray flares I. Solar flares observed with Yohkoh SXT

We show how to estimate the size of spatially unresolved solar and stellar coronal flaring regions from the X-ray light curve and time-resolved temperature and emission measure values during the flare decay. Bymeans of extensive hydrodynamic modeling of decaying flaring loops, we propose and test a relationship between the decay time of the light curve in the band of a specific instrument and t...

Relating Coronal Mass Ejection Kinematics and Thermal Energy Release to Flare Emissions Using a Model of Solar Eruptions

We use a model of solar eruptions that combines a loss-of-equilibrium coronal mass ejection (CME) model with a multi-threaded flare loop model in order to understand the relationship between the CME kinematics, thermal energy release, and soft X-ray emissions in solar eruptions. We examine the correlation between CME acceleration and the peak soft X-ray flux in many modeled cases with different...

Modeling an X-ray Flare on Proxima Centauri: evidence of two flaring loop components and of two heating mechanisms at work

We model in detail a flare observed on Proxima Centauri with the EPIC-PN on board XMM-Newton at high statistics and high time resolution and coverage. Time-dependent hydrodynamic loop modeling is used to describe the rise and peak of the light curve, and a large fraction of the decay, including its change of slope and a secondary maximum, over a duration of more than 2 hours. The light curve, t...
